Information on Inpatient-Residential, PHP and IOP Drug & Alcohol Addiction Treatment Programs…

There are a myriad of substance abuse treatment programs throughout the country and it can be overwhelming to differentiate which program is the best fit for you.  Residential (also referred to as “inpatient”) drug and alcohol rehab programs allow little freedom as all services including housing are in the same location. Of all the different types of addiction treatment options out there, residential/inpatient rehab is far and away the most common.

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) are a step down, allowing individuals to live in apartment like settings with 4 people to a residence and then are transported to a different location where clinical services are held.  This is closer to a real life experience than residential programs as clients cook and clean for themselves.  They take into account teaching and implementing ADL services.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) on the other hand, are the least restrictive as clients reside in their home environment and come to the clinical building for their treatment care.  IOP programs are usually recommended for those who have already completed a residential or PHP substance abuse program as they are likely to run into their old triggers of people, places and things.  Residential programs provide a minimum of 32 hours of substance abuse treatment, PHP programs offer 25 hours of clinical services, and IOP programs offer 9 hours of services.

Drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs offer a variety of services, dependent on the level of care.  When first completing a detoxification program, it is often recommended that clients transition to residential or PHP substance abuse programs in order to provide them with a higher level of care.  It is important to know what types of services are offered.  Some of the most highly researched treatment modalities that have helped prove long-term success include:

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • One-on-one individual therapy
  • Process groups/Caseload groups
  • Self-help recovery groups such as AA, NA, SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery
  • Psycho-educational groups such as relapse prevention, nutrition, spirituality, how to have fun in sobriety, and the importance of not having to recover alone
  • Daring Way (Shame and Guilt)
  • Eye Movement Rapid Desensitization (EMDR)
  • Experiential Therapy

Other adjunct offerings may include chiropractic care, massage therapy, acupuncture, nature walks, music and art therapy, and a variety of others. In fact, many drug & alcohol rehab programs have begun integrating animals into the treatment process, such as Equine Therapies, which has been shown to be very effective and even calming.

Don’t be afraid to call and ask specific questions about the program(s) you may be interested to ensure your needs get met.
