HEALTH ASSESSMENT: Starting Your Addiction Treatment Correctly

The first clinical step to the addiction treatment process is almost always going to be the initial assessments. In many cases, at least with the better drug rehab centers out there, there will be a few assessments. There will be an initial Psych-Social which, generally goes over the patient’s entire using history stemming back to the start of their drug or alcohol abuse. Then there will be medical and psychiatric assessments. The medical assessment generally covers the patient’s physical aspects, whereas the psychiatric assessment covers behavioral, emotional and mental health matters.

There are a number of reasons as to the importance for these assessments. One of the primary reasons, for instance, has to do with the potential presence of any co-occurring disorders – this is when a mental health illness exists concurrently with the drug or alcohol addiction (sometimes referred to as “dual-diagnosis disorders”). In fact, over the past 10 to 15 years it has become much more known that many drug addicts and alcohols suffer from co-occurring disorders like depression, PTSD, anxiety, bipolar disorder and other others.

Another reason for health assessments in drug treatment environments has to do with the patient’s physical tolerability for the particular recovery program setting. For instance, many addiction treatment centers are ill equipped to handle clients with concurrent medical issues such as, diabetes, extreme high blood pressure, severe dietary restrictions and so forth.

Here at Illuminate Recovery and Wellness Center we absolutely subscribe to the importance of conducting in-depth health assessments at the start of the recovery process. Many years of expertise in the treatment process have shown that one of the many components behind a client’s success in sobriety have to do with not only how effective an initial assessment is, but equally, how the treatment facility is able to respond and customize the level care based on the patient’s assessment results.
