Group Therapy While in Addiction Treatment

The Illuminate Recovery Program Is Tailored to Your Needs

Inpatient treatment programs involve a great deal of structure that many patients find intimidating. Our outpatient program in Scottsdale, AZ, however, provides you with the flexibility you need to make therapy work for you. We can design a unique treatment regimen for every patient’s needs, including the use of group therapy to help individuals build bonds with others who understand their struggles and provide them with support on their journey.

One of the primary tenets of Illuminate Recovery’s outpatient programs is the ability to achieve sobriety while living in the real world, outside of counseling. Group therapy allows patients to gain a support structure that will help them maintain their family lives, jobs, and other connections after treatment is complete. The fresh approach to recovery that our outpatient programs provide helps many individuals recover from addiction to alcohol and drugs.

Group Therapy While in Addiction Treatment
Reduce Isolation with Group Therapy

Reduce Isolation with Group Therapy

Group therapy is a staple in many addiction treatment programs. That’s because group-focused therapy can offer several benefits. Learn more about why group therapy is so essential in the recovery process and why it benefits patients recovering from drug addiction.

One of the biggest challenges that many of those in recovery face is feeling alone and isolated. Even if friends and family want to help, they might not fully understand what patients are going through. Because of this, it’s important for patients to spend time in group environments where others have been through the same things.

Group sessions can make it immediately clear that no one is going through an entirely unique experience. Lots of other people have incredible struggles, and many of them find success at the end of rehab.

It can be freeing to finally realize that many other people have had similar experiences. Others have hit rock bottom; others have made serious mistakes in life, and others have doubts about their own chance at recovery. Hearing others admit these things can make all the difference to any patients who feel misunderstood.

It can be frustrating for those in recovery to feel like they’re always on the receiving end of

support, help, and assistance. In fact, many patients say it is demoralizing. One way to combat these feelings is by creating opportunities for patients to help others.

In group sessions, patients can share their own experiences with others who are going through a tough time. They can lend support and help others stay accountable. All of this improves self-confidence.

How We Use Group Therapy at Illuminate Recovery

Illuminate Interior

In group therapy sessions at Illuminate Recovery, we help those struggling with addiction through a six-phase process.

1. Pre-contemplation

The first phase applies to individuals who do not believe they have an addiction and therefore have not considered making a lifestyle change. Many times, they have chosen group therapy at the encouragement of counselors, loved ones, or the courts.

2. Contemplation

Through group meetings and the guidance of counselors, the individual begins to change their point of view and realize that they may benefit from addiction recovery.

3. Preparation

In this phase, the individual may still be abusing substances, but they understand the way that addiction has negatively affected their life and have decided to stop and commit to recovery.

4. Action

This phase is one in which the individual decides on the most effective strategy for their recovery and begins to make the lifestyle changes that will help them to successfully recover with the assistance of other group members and therapists.

5. Maintenance

This is the point in the group therapy process in which the individual works toward remaining clean and sober and avoiding relapse. Some individuals experience complete recovery during the maintenance phase.

6. Recurrence

It is not uncommon for an individual to have a difficult struggle that involves relapse. In group therapy, they are encouraged to get back into their sober lifestyle, return to one of the earlier phases, and quickly progress back to maintenance, armed with a better understanding of what caused their relapse.

Is Group Therapy an Effective Treatment?

One of the most important facets of group therapy is the companionship and camaraderie that it provides to individuals who are undergoing addiction recovery. Individuals who suffer from this disease know that it is incredibly lonely, which is part of the vicious cycle that causes the individual to keep using. The understanding and fellowship that individuals receive from others in the group setting helps them to build confidence and find insight from the fellow group members, who both gain and give support to each other.

It is often difficult for an individual to find a solution to their substance abuse because they are too emotionally attached to the addiction. In a group setting, these individuals are able to talk through their issues with fellow group members who are non-judgmental and provide encouragement and constructive feedback. This makes group therapy one of the most effective tools in addiction recovery.

Cactus House

Sober, Safe Environments

The sober living facilities provided by The Sobriety Experience offer a home away from home where individuals can receive the support and guidance they need 24 hours a day. The staff members at these facilities hold individuals accountable by using random breathalyzers and urinalysis, verifying meeting attendance and IOP participation, and ensuring that they keep up with shared chores.

● Finding hope. Many individuals who suffer from addiction feel that they are helpless to achieve recovery and fear they will never have a “normal life.” In group therapy, they are able to see others who they identify with making positive changes while they support each other and celebrate each other’s victories.

● Creating a support system and forging new relationships. The healthy relationships that individuals build with other members in group therapy often last far beyond their time in treatment and provide a constant source of encouragement and support that helps them maintain long-term sobriety.

● Peer feedback. It is vital for individuals in recovery to get feedback from others who are going through the same struggles. This is often much more effective than any advice they receive from therapists and counselors.

● A broad range of perspectives. There are many ways to approach the situations that arise during addiction recovery. Group therapy allows the individual to hear potential viewpoints that they would have never considered or possibly not have gotten from one-on-one counseling. This improves problem-solving skills and helps the individual to develop coping skills for the obstacles they face.

● Communication skills. One challenge many individuals who suffer from addiction face is effectively communicating with others without getting defensive or lashing out at constructive criticism. Group therapy provides a safe environment where they can learn to communicate in a respectful, honest, and assertive manner.

● New approaches to interacting with others. The environment of group therapy provides a microcosm of the outside world that individuals will face every day when they have completed treatment. In this setting, they learn to interact with others in appropriate ways while leaving their destructive and dysfunctional patterns behind.

● Learning to accept and provide support. In group therapy, individuals learn the powerful benefits of being able to gain support from others who understand their struggles while also providing support to those in need. Through the benefits that each party gains in this experience, individuals begin to realize that they have something valuable to offer to others, which improves self-esteem and self-worth.

● Being part of something. Many individuals who struggle with addiction have become isolated from their loved ones, peers, and others they encounter in daily life. Group therapy allows these individuals to bond with other members and find the human connection that they have been missing in their lives. This universality provides relief from their feelings of isolation and helps them to heal.
